Enhanced Rock Weathering

One remarkable project involves Lithos Carbon's use of enhanced rock weathering. This process utilizes finely crushed volcanic rock, a quarry byproduct, which is spread across agricultural lands. When this basalt interacts with rainwater, it converts carbon dioxide into stable bicarbonate ions. These ions eventually make their way to the ocean, where they can be stored for thousands of years. This method not only helps in carbon capture but also enriches soil health, benefiting farmers with improved crop yields.

Regenerative Farming Practices

The agricultural sector, with its significant carbon footprint, presents opportunities for carbon removal through regenerative farming. Agoro Carbon Alliance collaborates with farmers to adopt practices like no-till farming and the use of cover crops. These methods enhance soil's natural carbon storage capacity while improving soil health and productivity. Microsoft’s collaboration with Agoro is set to remove over 2.6 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide over the next 12 years, showcasing the potential of agriculture in carbon reduction.

BECCS: Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage

Stockholm Exergi's Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) project represents another innovative approach. By retrofitting its bioenergy plant, Stockholm Exergi captures carbon dioxide from burning forestry waste and stores it deep beneath the North Sea. This technique leverages existing energy infrastructure to achieve carbon neutrality and beyond.
